ARTERY INTERVIEW : MAY 2021

The Worple Group

Named after a well known local street in Wimbledon, London UK The Worple Art Group was formed back in year 1983 by local artist Charles Shannon. Since then, and with a working core group of about 20 local artists representing a huge variety of different art styles, from traditional to innovative, The Worple Art Group has been organising its original art exhibitions at the heart of Wimbledon’s town centre twice a year (Autumn, Spring) -usually opening with a Friday Night Preview and an all -Day Saturday Community Viewing.

Representing the epitome of an ‘Artists of the Same Art Habitat – Supporting Each Other’ philosophy, The ARTERY Project pays special tribute to a series of distinguished Worple Group Artists and their individual ARTery Interview responses.

MOYA HOGARTH ARTery INTERVIEW

-THREE –

QUESTIONS

What Do You Call Art?

A difficult one- but I would say it is a reflection of the human soul. Certain animals supposedly create art but I think it's more by luck than judgement! Everyone has a soul and each soul is completely unique-therefore art is a unique manifestation of a soul...Also as we believe in God's creation, it is God present in all that we 'create' : paintings, music, poetry etc.

Why are You an Artist?

I am an artist because I love the actual creativity involved.... again, a God given talent cannot be ignored!

What is the Message You bring to Art?

Hopefully that it is something to be celebrated, and that the world needs hope and beauty ( particularly now!!) Interestingly a lot of people during lockdown have turned to art- now why would that be?! I think they see more clearly what needs to be done in the arts . No constant distractions, noise, busy busy lives rushing to and fro!!

Have you watched Grayson Perry? I thought his programmes were great and all those artists of varying ability- all included- so inspiring!

-TEN–

FINISH THE SENTENCE

Art is a weapon against ...complacency, small mindedness and boredom

Art standards are set by... those who care to take risks

If there was a Nobel Prize for Art the criteria would be -one who has brought the most joy and originality to the world.

Favourite Artist of all time- very difficult question! It has to be between Leonardo da Vinci and Monet..... two very different styles, so very hard to pin down!

Favourite quote about Art- I looked up a few and found Pablo Picasso’s one very good: Art Washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life

Best way for getting out of an Art Block- Try some technique completely new to you

Best Advice to a Young Artist- don’t listen to those who say art is not ‘work’ and want you to do something ‘more useful’! Art is essential to human development and so always strive to do your best and believe totally in yourself.

Best Place to Display Art- In a public place -especially like Banksy does!

Art isn’t finished until....an interesting statement- does it mean Art as done by an individual or Art in the broader sense? I would say Art is never finished to be honest! How many artists and musicians over the years strive to finish a piece of work but cannot draw a line under their score or put away their paints..... it must mean we are constantly in touch with what’s going on in our soul but dare not say it is ever complete! As you and I believe in God’s creation- and that we are His masterpiece- it is as if creation is still going on....all the time within our souls! How wonderful is that?!
